Plasticman Institute didirikan pada bulan Juni 2010. Labuan Bajo terletak di Kecamatan Komodo. Taman Nasional Komodo juga terletak di Kecamatan Komodo. UNESCO menetapkan Taman Nasional Komodo sebagai Harta Warisan Dunia dan Cadangan Cagar Biosfer. Wilayah ini merupakan tempat tujuan pariwisata alam yang unik dan berkelas. Tetapi mempunyai masalah besar yaitu sampah.

Di masa yang akan datang Labuan Bajo akan berkembang pesat, banyak jalan,hotel-hotel baru, perumahan,pertokoan, restoran dan berbagai bisnis.

Ini jarang sekali terjadi di suatu tahap awal disana terdapat peluang dan kemungkinan untuk melindungi masyarakat dari kerusakan alam tempat mereka hidup

Inisiatif Plasticman institute mempunyai dampak positif besar terhadap lingkungan hidup alam Labuan Bajo.

• Plasticman meingkatkan kesadaran pengelolaan sampah plastik, beling, besi, mendaur ulang, mencari sumber energy pengganti, mempromosikan penggunaan biogas dari sampah organic.
• Relawan-relawan sampah memberikan waktu luangnya dalam kegiatan ini, mengunjungi sekolahan setempat untuk mengajar anak didik tentang perlindungan alam dan merancang kegiatan kebersihan dalam masyarakat.
• Mereka mempertunjukan manfaat ekonomi dari sampah plastic.
• Mereka giat memberikan pemahaman tentang pentingnya ekosistem pantai dan pemanfaatan sumber daya alam berkelanjuatan untuk suatu tujuan jangka panjang dari pariwisata alam.
• Mendidik murid sekolah menegah tentang konsep pariwisata alam dan pentingnya konservasi sumber daya alam lingkungan pesisir.

Plasticman Institute

Plasticman Institute was founded in June 2010. Labuan Bajo is bordering Komodo National Park, listed on the Unesco World Heritage list, a precious eco system with a huge waste problem. Labuan Bajo is developing fast, tourism booming. Plasticman Institute has set up a community based waste project.

• We raise awareness about waste management and recycling.
• We visit local schools to teach the children about importance of the coastal ecosystem and environmental protection.
• We organize clean-up events with the local community.
• We increase understanding of the economic value of plastic debris.
• We educate high-school students about the concept of eco-tourism and the importance of marine-life conservancy.
• We have set up the Bank Sampah concept: we teach local households to separate the various types of plastic, to hand the plastic in. Fishing communities are fishing for plastic in the sea and collect plastic from the beaches. The plastic every community or individual hands in is weighed and noted down on their Bank Sampah card. The plastic will be sold to recycling plants on Java. The income from the sales will be shared by ratio, according to the weight handed in. The money that school children generate will be deposited in their savings account , to pay for their education after primary school. Local fisherman generate additional income for their families. Bank Sampah concept will minimize littering plastic into the sea in around Komodo National Park.

For training purposes the local government gave us a small plot of land:

Plasticman Institute Eductional Centre: we have installed a 'reading garden' : after school children pass by and can read books for free and be educated about sustainability.
