Plasticman has set up the Bank Sampah concept: local households, hotels, restaurants, fishing communities have been instructed how to identify the various types of plastic packaging, to separate and to hand the plastic in.
The communities are located in Labuan Bajo and greater area and on the outlying islands.
The fishing communities on the outlying island are fishing for plastic in the sea and collect plastic from the beaches. The plastic that every community or individual hands in is weighed and noted down on their Bank Sampah card.
The plastic will be sold to recycling plants on Java and the money from the sales will be shared by ratio, according to the weight handed in.
The money that school children generate will be deposited in their bank savings account, to pay for their education after primary school.
For local fisherman the plastic collection at outlying islands will mean an additional income.
Bank Sampah concept is an incentive to hand in plastic, minimizing littering of plastic on land and into the sea around Komodo National Park. |
